I left Noelie in the breakfast bar, nursing a gentle but insistent hangover, no doubt encouraged by a lack of sleep. She had to work and prepare for the arrival of Siqiniq, the model. I had yet to learn just what Siqiniq would be modelling, but it was time to find my cabin, and to sleep.

I followed the instructions posted on plastic signs screwed into the bulkheads, the most informative of which was outside Johanna’s office. I lingered as long as it took to memorise the route below decks to the guests’ quarters, and then moved on before Johanna returned. If Knudsen’s apology was genuine, then I was confident the incident in the auditorium was forgotten, or at least ignored. For the time being.

Unfortunately, I realised my challenge was not the only thing to be ignored. A quick check of my smartphone revealed three missed calls and twelve messages – two from Atii, and the rest from Aluki. I scrolled through the messages as I shuffled down the corridor and promptly bumped into a guest as she stepped out of her cabin.

“Eva,” I said, as I looked up to apologise.

She smiled back, and I relaxed, stuffing my phone into my pocket before tapping the key card hanging from the lanyard around my neck.

“My cabin is down here somewhere,” I said, with a nod to the doors on both sides of the corridor. She leaned closer to look at my card and then pointed at the cabin door opposite hers.

“We’re neighbours,” she said.

“Perfect.” I glanced at my phone for the time and nodded when Eva asked if I had eaten breakfast. “It merged with dinner,” I said. “But now I have to sleep.”

Eva’s gaze drifted to my shoulder, and I shook my head.

“I’m okay. It doesn’t hurt.” I almost added I have pills, but the wine had worked just as well, although I just knew a couple of painkillers and a few hours’ sleep would do me the world of good.

“Lunch then,” Eva said. “If you’d like to meet up.”

“I would,” I said, swapping phone numbers at her suggestion. I thought about mentioning the helicopter, as it would make a good photo to tease her husband with, but Eva excused herself, promising to meet later. I swiped my key card through the lock and stumbled over the lip of the door and into my cabin.

My small backpack looked even smaller in the middle of the bed, and I caught myself laughing at the thought of the wannabe city girl who packed light, even on a cruise. I convinced myself I was simply the product of children’s homes and spontaneous police assignments in remote settlements. I was lucky if I ever packed anything more than a toothbrush and a spare sanitary pad. A charger for my phone was often an annoying afterthought.

But thoughts of what I might have packed could wait, as I slid onto the bed, pulled my boots off, and collapsed.

“Pills.”

I sat up, turned my head towards the bathroom, thought about just how far it was, how many steps, and then slumped back onto the bed.
